In this photographic project I am going to talk about the development of women's clothing in India. The project is ostensibly about the evolution of clothing, but in fact it is about the process of valuing the status of women in India. It is also a call to the local people of India to show more respect to women. I will talk specifically about how patriarchy, sexual assault and the materialization of Indian women have affected Indian women's dress and fashion culture. Patriarchy is a very important system in India's history that materializes women. Patriarchy dictates how to be a modest and submissive “woman”. Women did not have the autonomy to choose their clothing. They had to wear corsets and uncomfortable clothing that not only restricted their movement but also symbolized their freedom. At that time, women's dress and clothing choices were the result of rigid traditional practices and gender roles imposed on them.
